John-Michael Keyes, co-founder of the I Love U Guys Foundation, will speak about bullying and school violence. He'll include powerful reminders of the importance of safety and the recognition that no school is immune. Inspiration for the foundation sprang from the death of Keyes' daughter, Emily, during a hostage-taking and shooting incident at Platte Canyon High School in 2006 in Bailey, Colorado. Emily's final text message to her family was, "I love u guys." The foundation's mission is to promote collaboration with families, schools, communities, government entities and organizations to protect young people. They developed the Standard Response Protocol, a classroom response to any school incident. Schools and government agencies in several states have adopted the protocol and hail it as a simple, effective way to cope with dangerous situations. Mr. Keyes will share details of the family's response and the deliberate decisions about handling national and local media, finances, donations, community healing, support people and organizations and the creation of the I Love U Guys Foundation. Mr Keyes outlines not just the immediate aftermath and response, but events that occurred in the years that followed. He'll talk about how the Standard Response Protocol was developed, describe how it works and why it is fast becoming a standard in many schools.
